The festival is bubbling all summer long with the Detours Cyphers: the very essence of the festival!
From July to September, the Cyphers take place every Wednesday in the center of Brussels and in different cities of the FWB (Namur, Liège, Mons, La Louvière) and internationally (Lille – France, Goma – DRC, Casablanca – Morocco) !
They take place in 3 parts:
An open stage accessible to all
A street show: a creation designed for the street, in dance, circus and street art.
A dance “battle” in a different style every week
Over the years, these events have become unifying for the Belgian Hip-Hop community.
They are engines of meetings and allow to cross artistic disciplines to give rise to unique performances!
The final of these Battles brings together the winners of each week on the main stage of the Théâtre National Wallonie Bruxelles, for a colorful closing evening of the festival!

Battle : 100 % female
Urban culture – dance, hip-hop, breakdance – is a fairly masculine milieu, often represented by muscular bodies, strength, competition… But over the last ten years or so, more and more women have emerged in this milieu. It’s time to make room for them, and let them take over the dance floor!

“Gratia plena” was created and presented for the Philippe Grombeer tribute at Les Halles de Schaerbeek. It’s a choreography, like a physical experiment, in which the dancer deprives himself of one sense to develop others. For it is by leaving our comfort zone, by destabilizing our supports, that we regain awareness of our own body.

Battle : Funky Styles – (Lock – Pop – Wacking)
These three styles are, as the name indicates, connected to Funk music, but also Disco. All three were born in California around the beginning of the 70s. Popping is a group of sub-styles developed in different Californian cities, connected by the technique of Pop, a muscular contraction made on the rhythm of the music. Locking is a dance invented by Don Campbellock, which consists of a series of dynamic movements that end in a Lock (a pose that involves the different joints of the body). Waacking is a dance born in the gay community of Los Angeles. This style consists of arm movements performed with force, telling different stories and characters, inspired by silent movie icons, disco stars, martial arts masters, and even cartoons.

Detours Quartiers are mediation actions that allow us to reach a disadvantaged public, by going directly in the street to meet them. During free workshops, champions of the battles pass on their passion for dance to the youngest.
In order to offer rich and complete moments, as during the Cyphers, we offer international street performances. This is the opportunity for everyone to have a new approach of urban culture and have access to quality program !
We observe a real mix of audiences in the Detours Quartier: the regular audience of the Detours who follow the events every week travel to these neighborhoods where we can observe a real social mix.
DETOURS NEIGHBORHOODS X CHICAGO X SMALL CHATEAU
For 2023, A project is being created in collaboration with the mediation unit of the National Theater: a Detours Quartier in Chicago (Brussels) preceded by actions at the “Petit Château”, a center for asylum seeker.
We wish to develop our mediation actions with this project in order to create a link with asylum seekers around urban dance.
These actions will encourage residents to participate in Detours Quartiers in Chicago, to take advantage of quality urban dance program, and to take part in the battle which will allow the winner to dance at the TN during the final!

Through Work in Progress, Detours Festival supports the professionalization of the urban choreographers of the FWB.
During two evenings, young choreographers share the stage to present their works in progress to our Belgian and international partners and to the Detours audience, who all award prizes. Prior to the WIP evenings, each company can enjoy two weeks of residencies.
10 projects are selected each year, always based on quality, with a concern for the representation of genres, identities and cultures. You can also find African choreographers from Morocco and Congo at the WIP. The selected projects benefit from artistic support, tools for creation, development, production and communication assistance.
We are committed to bring together more artists and create new international collaborations.
We are proud to be able to highlight the work of urban artists, to support them in their project so that urban arts never stop renewing themselves and bubbling!
So, if you have a creation to present to us, click on this link to fill out the form!
UPCOMING DATES
Each year, we dedicate one or more evenings to showcases for accomplished works.
The program mainly includes creations that won an award at the previous WIP. In 2022, the premiere of “La Cage” (Faraja Batumike) took place at the Raffinerie / Charleroi Danse. In 2023, the show JillZ by the young choreographer Casaoui Medhi Dahkan will be presented at the Raffinerie. This show won Charleroi-Danse prize in 2022.

Très em cena (Brazil)
The show “Tactical-stratefical detours to survive urban life” aims to approach public spaces using tricks that reshape the forms of places of use, encouraging detours. Thus, the staircase, architecturally conceived as a place for moving between platforms, once diverted for dance use, becomes a picturesque space, where the body makes other uses of it.
The practice of changing the use of stairs in urban space is the characteristic action of the piece “desvios urbanos”. In fact, the proposal is not simply to “dialogue with the city”, but rather practices that seek to “do with” urban areas.
